Join us to learn how to build impactful and sustainable partnerships with Indigenous communities facing animal welfare challenges. Guest speakers will share stories of successful collaborations, and attendees will gain a clearer understanding of the importance of integrating a culturally sensitive and collaborative approach into their mission and operations. This presentation will explore historical and current events that have shaped the relationships between the animal welfare field and indigenous communities and how racism, exploitation, and cultural appropriation have exacerbated existing challenges.

Rachel Thompson is the program manager, operations and strategy of Pets for Life (PFL) at The Humane Society of the United States. PFL, now in over 50 markets throughout the county, is rooted in social justice and focused on creating equity in and access to pet care resources and information for all pet owners. Rachel currently serves on the board of Paws Between Homes, an Atlanta-based nonprofit serving the pets of people facing housing insecurity. Originally from northern New Jersey, Atlanta became home after completing a Bachelor of Anthropology from the University of Georgia.

Senior Program Manager, Enforcement and Policy Reform, Pets for Life, Humane Society of the United States
Ashley Anderson-Mutch (she/her) has been working in animal welfare for the past 13 years - she began as a Humane Law Enforcement Officer in Philadelphia and is currently the Senior Program Manager of Enforcement and Policy Reform with Pets for Life. She is dedicated to addressing the ways to end systemic inequities in animal welfare. She lives in the suburbs of Philadelphia with her wife Kimberly and their daughter Yumi.
Kimberly Federspiel
President, Friends of the Havre Animal Shelter
Kimberly assists in the Havre Animal Shelter when necessary, including fostering. She conducts all business for the FHAS and works for community outreach, specifically collaboration on the Rocky Boy Reservation. Friends of the Havre promotes spaying and neutering and vaccinations and brings resources to help the community.
