Drug Protocols for Spay/Neuter Clinics
The ASPCA's guidelines, based on ASV’s Veterinary Medical Care Guidelines for Spay-Neuter Programs (JAVMA, July 15, 2016), require a multi-modal anesthesia protocol which incorporates analgesia, mandatory use of an opioid, and one other pain-relieving drug. We consult with board-certified veterinary anesthesiologists to ensure our protocols are comprehensive and consistent with best practices in pharmacology.
Proper dosing and tracking of medication can be confusing, and when you operate a high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter clinic it’s especially important to find efficient tracking mechanisms.
The following drug protocols are used by the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance to deliver and record the appropriate drugs for patient. Your protocols may be different, so your drug charts may need to be adjusted.
Also included are guidelines to aid licensed veterinarians and clinics in determining proper ordering, storage, and handling of controlled drugs.
