Association of Shelter Veterinarians Awards the ASPCA’s Dr. Stephanie Janeczko the 2020 Meritorious Service Award
The Association of Shelter Veterinarians (ASV) has awarded Dr. Stephanie Janeczko the 2020 Meritorious Service Award for her significant contributions to shelter medicine, including leadership, public service, research, education, advocacy, and clinical practice. Dr. Janeczko is currently Vice President of Shelter Medicine Services for the ASPCA and Regent for the Shelter Medicine Practice board specialty. She previously served as Medical Director and Director of Operations for Animal Care Centers of New York City and is a past President of the Association of Shelter Veterinarians
She is board certified in both Shelter Medicine and Canine and Feline Practice through the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners and is a Certified Animal Welfare Administrator. Dr. Janeczko has expertise in managing infectious diseases in small animal populations and has contributed to veterinary textbooks focused on shelter medicine, including co-editing the 2nd edition of Infectious Disease Management in Animal Shelters and authoring chapters in Shelter Medicine for Veterinarians and Staff, Animal Behavior for Shelter Veterinarians and Staff, and High-Quality, High-Volume Spay and Neuter and Other Shelter Surgeries.
Dr. Janeczko leads an impressive team of 5 veterinarians board-certified in Shelter Medicine Practice on the Shelter Medicine Services team, representing 17% of all shelter medicine specialists worldwide.

The ASPCA’s Shelter Medicine Service (SMS) team works to improve the health and welfare of animals in shelters and communities by strengthening shelter medicine programs and strategically applying expertise to improve animal health and shelter function.
Recently, the ASPCA launched the Julie Morris Shelter Medicine Residency Program, for which Dr. Janeczko will serve as program director. The program will provide trainees with intense clinical training in all aspects of shelter medicine, including clinical medicine and surgery, facility design, shelter operations, population management, epidemiology, infectious diseases, animal behavior, high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgery, community outreach, public health, cruelty investigations and forensics, and disaster response.
